2025 iPad Air Refresh: What to Expect
Apple is reportedly releasing a new iPad Air with internal upgrades in Spring 2025, just a year after the M2 refresh. This raises questions about the extent of these updates.
New Magic Keyboard
A redesigned Magic Keyboard for the iPad Air is in the works, potentially featuring a new function row similar to other iPad keyboards. Unlike the iPad Pro's version, it won't have an aluminum top case, hopefully leading to a lower price point. The current Magic Keyboard starts at $299 for 11" and $349 for 13".
Potential Upgrades
- Display: Rumors suggest a 90Hz LCD with "liquid motion" technology, but this is unconfirmed. See how this might compare to other top tablets: Top Smartphones of 2024.
- Chip: An upgrade to either the M3 or M4 chip is likely. The M3 seems more probable, possibly due to existing stockpiles after the rapid transition of M3 Macs to M4. For insights into Apple's chip strategy, see: One Mac or Two?
- 5G Modem: Apple's own 5G modem might debut in the cellular iPad Air models.
- Other: Potential improvements include 600 nits brightness, Wi-Fi 7, a rear LED flash, and Thunderbolt support. Learn about other Apple developments here: Apple Adapts to EU's USB-C Mandate.
While Face ID would be a welcome addition, it's unlikely to appear in this refresh.
