Amazon Launches AGI SF Lab for Advanced AI Agent Development

Amazon is establishing a new R&D lab in San Francisco, the Amazon AGI SF Lab, dedicated to building foundational capabilities for advanced AI agents. Led by David Luan, co-founder of Adept, the lab aims to create agents capable of complex workflows across digital and physical realms.

The lab's initial focus will be on enabling AI agents to perform real-world actions, learn from human feedback, self-correct, and infer user goals. This builds upon the work of Amazon's broader AGI team, with robotics research lead Pieter Abbeel working closely with the new lab. OpenAI's advancements in AI video generation offer a glimpse into the potential of such technologies.

Staffed by former Adept employees, the lab is actively recruiting researchers from diverse fields like quantitative finance, physics, and math. This expansion follows Amazon's licensing of Adept's technology and the integration of Luan's team into the company, working under Rohit Prasad, the former head of Alexa and current AGI team lead. This move mirrors Blue Origin's approach of integrating acquired technologies into their broader operations.

Amazon's foray into agentic AI aligns with industry trends, with significant market growth projected for AI agents. The company's recent introduction of conversational agents for its Bedrock AI platform and Amazon Q Business assistant further underscores this commitment. This strategic direction positions Amazon to compete with other major players like OpenAI and Google in the rapidly evolving field of AI agents.
