UK Consumers Join Apple App Store Lawsuit

A class action lawsuit against Apple, led by Dr. Rachael Kent, is gaining momentum in the UK. The lawsuit challenges Apple's 30% commission on App Store purchases, claiming it's excessive and unlawful. Similar legal battles are emerging globally, putting Apple's App Store practices under scrutiny.

The lawsuit, now valued at over £1.5 billion, has expanded to include more UK consumers and businesses. Initially filed in 2021, the claim now covers App Store purchases made between October 1, 2015, and November 15, 2024. The UK’s Competition Appeal Tribunal recently confirmed the inclusion of those who made their first relevant purchases between August 9, 2024, and November 15, 2024.

Dr. Kent, a professor at King’s College London, argues that Apple abuses its market dominance, negatively impacting UK consumers. The case is scheduled for a full trial on January 13, 2025.

Apple maintains its commission is fair and comparable to other digital marketplaces. The company points out that 84% of App Store apps are free, and many developers qualify for a reduced 15% commission rate. For more insights on app-related issues, see Apple Wallet Order Tracking.
