Setting Up Apple Legacy Contacts: Ensuring Your Digital Legacy
Apple's Legacy Contact feature allows designated individuals to access your Apple account data after your passing. This includes apps like Messages, Notes, and Photos, but excludes purchases and Keychain passwords. iOS and macOS updates regularly enhance security features like this.
Key Requirements and Access
- You must enable two-factor authentication and be over 13 years old (age may vary by region).
- Your device needs iOS 15.2, iPadOS 15.2, or macOS 12.1 or later.
- Legacy Contacts require your death certificate and an access key to request account access.
- Access is granted for three years after Apple's approval.
The access key is crucial for security. Share it securely, preferably digitally through Messages if the contact has a compatible device. Otherwise, provide a printed copy or secure digital file. For more on digital security, see Android's enhanced tracker alerts.
Adding and Removing Legacy Contacts
Adding or removing contacts is simple through your device's Settings app under your Apple ID, then Sign-In & Security, followed by Legacy Contact. Removing a contact invalidates their access key.
Family Sharing and Legacy Contacts
Family Sharing group members can be designated as Legacy Contacts. You can also choose anyone from your contacts.
