Apple Watch Finally Moving to 5G with MediaTek Modems

The Apple Watch, which has featured optional cellular connectivity since Series 3 in 2017, is finally getting a 5G upgrade. Despite iPhones adopting 5G in 2020, the Apple Watch has remained on 4G LTE. Apple's 2024 releases are shaping up to be significant.

According to Bloomberg's Mark Gurman, Apple will switch from Intel to MediaTek for its Apple Watch modems, enabling the shift to 5G. This transition will utilize 5G Redcap, a standard designed for wearables and IoT devices that don't require high-speed data. This move is notable as it confirms the presence of Intel modems within the Apple Watch, despite Apple's transition away from Intel chips in its Mac lineup.

The 5G upgrade is expected to coincide with the release of the Apple Watch Ultra 3, which may also include a new satellite connectivity feature.
