Chrome for Android Gets Faster
Google has significantly improved Chrome's performance on Android devices over the past two years, focusing on the Speedometer benchmark, which measures how quickly a browser interacts with web pages.
Since April 2023, Speedometer 2.1 scores have more than doubled on many devices. Loading a Google Docs document on a Pixel Tablet is now 50% faster.
Key Improvements
- Build Optimizations: A new high-performance build for premium Android devices utilizes ARM64, speed-optimized code compilation, profile-guided optimization, and improved code ordering. This accounts for over half of the performance gains.
- V8 and Blink Engine Enhancements: An optimized HTML parser, V8's Sparkplug and Maglev compilers, improved garbage collection timing, and other optimizations contribute to faster rendering and JavaScript execution. Read more about Gemini Extensions.
- Android Partnership Optimizations: Collaboration with Android partners, particularly Qualcomm, has led to optimized thread scheduling and better interaction with the operating system. The Snapdragon 8 Elite platform saw a 60-80% improvement in Speedometer 3.0.
These improvements have resulted in record-breaking Speedometer performance on mobile, especially with the latest Snapdragon 8 Elite. For more information on Google's advancements, check out Google's GenCast AI.
