Chromecast Ambient Mode Bug Shrinks Weather and Time Display

A recent bug affecting non-Google TV Chromecast devices has significantly reduced the size of the weather and time display in Ambient Mode. This issue makes it difficult to read the information from a distance, impacting a key feature of Ambient Mode.

The problem appears to be caused by a server-side change and affects various Chromecast models, including the 2nd, 1st, and 3rd generations, as well as the Ultra. The Chromecast with Google TV and Google TV Streamer are unaffected. Adjusting Ambient Mode settings in the Google Home app does not resolve the issue.

This bug follows Google's decision to discontinue the Chromecast line, letting current inventory run out. For more information on this, see Google is no longer making Chromecasts. The company has also rebranded "Chromecast built-in" to "Google Cast." You can learn more about this change in Google Cast is replacing Chromecast built-in.

The shrunken display makes the time and weather information almost unreadable, especially from afar. This issue contrasts with the Samsung Galaxy S25's debut with Snapdragon 8 Elite and Galaxy AI, which focuses on enhanced user experience. While Google has not yet addressed the bug, a fix is expected soon. For more on Google's software developments, see Google Redesigns Gemini Interface on Android.
