Google Home App Tests AI-Powered "Help me create" for Custom Automations

The Google Home app is testing a new Gemini-powered feature called "Help me create" for building custom smart home automations. This feature simplifies the creation process, offering a more user-friendly alternative to the script editor.

Users can input simple commands like "Turn on all lights at sunset" or "Save energy while I'm away" to generate personalized automations. These automations consist of three key components:

  • Starters: Define when the automation begins, based on specific times or device states.
  • Conditions (Optional): Set restrictions on when the automation starts. Multiple conditions can be combined using "Any" (if any condition is met) or "All" (if all conditions are met).
  • Actions: Specify the automation's tasks, such as adjusting speaker volume or controlling lights.

To access this feature, users need to join the Public Preview, enable "Experimental AI features," and navigate to the Automations tab. A bottom sheet allows users to type or speak their desired automation. Google provides suggested prompts, such as "Lock all the doors when everyone's away" or "Set a meditation time reminder." The feature is currently in testing and supports US English.
