Google Messages Enhances Profile Sharing Controls
Google Messages is rolling out enhanced profile sharing controls, allowing users to customize how their name and profile picture are displayed to others. This feature, previously known as "Profile discovery," has been renamed to "Profile sharing" and offers more granular privacy options.
Users can now choose from three settings:
- People you message: Your profile is visible to anyone you message.
- Only your contacts: Your profile is only visible to people in your contacts list.
- No one: Your profile is not shared with anyone.
This update provides greater control over profile visibility and addresses privacy concerns. The feature is accessible through the "Your profile" option in the account menu. For more on privacy features, see Android 15's 7-Day Privacy Dashboard.
Rollout and Availability
The enhanced profile sharing controls are currently rolling out to Google Messages users on the stable channel. While initially available to select users, Google has confirmed wider availability soon. This update follows the recent release of iOS 18.2, which also focuses on privacy enhancements.
