Google News Simplifies Navigation with Home Tab Redesign
Google News for Android has streamlined its bottom navigation bar, consolidating the "For you" and "Headlines" tabs into a single "Home" tab. The default view remains the personalized "For you" feed. A category carousel below the app bar provides access to various news sections, including Headlines, Local, World, Business, Technology, Entertainment, Sports, Science, and Health. This carousel previously resided within the "Headlines" tab.
This change simplifies navigation, moving from four tabs to three, similar to recent redesigns seen in Google Photos (iOS) and Google Maps. The update replaces underlines with a chip design to indicate the current feed. While this impacts one-handed reachability, it enhances the overall aesthetic, aligning with Material You design principles. For more on Google's app updates, see Google Chat's new features.
This redesign is currently rolling out with version 5.120.x on Android following a server-side update. It is not yet available on iOS. The app retains its blue accent color and does not yet incorporate Dynamic Color theming. The last major Google News update introduced a customizable "Following" feed.
