Fix Keyboard Input Lag on Windows

Experiencing keyboard lag on Windows? This guide provides nine solutions to resolve this frustrating issue.

Adjust Keyboard Properties

  1. Press Windows key + R, type "control keyboard," and hit Enter.
  2. Adjust the Repeat delay and Repeat rate to find a comfortable balance.
  3. Click OK to save changes.

Update or Reinstall Keyboard Driver

  1. Open Device Manager (search in Start menu).
  2. Right-click your keyboard driver, select "Update driver," then "Search automatically for drivers."
  3. If the issue persists, uninstall the driver, restart your computer, and Windows should reinstall it.

Disable Filter Keys

  1. Open Settings (search in Start menu).
  2. Go to Ease of Access > Keyboard.
  3. Turn off "Use Filter Keys."

Test in Safe Mode

  1. Press Windows key + X, select "Shut down or sign out," hold Shift, and click "Restart."
  2. Select Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Startup Settings > Restart.
  3. Press F6 to enter Safe Mode.

If the keyboard works in Safe Mode, it's a software issue. If not, it's likely a hardware problem.

Troubleshooting Wireless Keyboards

  • Replace batteries.
  • Resync the keyboard.
  • Change the USB port.
  • Reduce the distance between keyboard and receiver.
  • Minimize wireless interference from other devices.

Consider a New Keyboard or Alternatives

If all else fails, try a different keyboard. As an alternative, consider the On-Screen Keyboard, virtual keyboard apps, or speech-to-text software. For related information, check out Macs Rise in the Enterprise, Flexbar: Customizable Touchscreen, or TechniCalc: Powerful Calculator App.
