Install macOS Sequoia on Unsupported Macs
Apple officially supports macOS Sequoia only on newer Macs. Older models are deemed incompatible. However, using the OpenCore Legacy Patcher, you can install Sequoia on unsupported Macs. Be aware of potential issues like limited functionality due to hardware limitations and problems with the T2 security chip in some MacBook Air models. Learn more about Intel Mac support.
Why Update?
Apple provides security updates for only the three most recent macOS versions. Running an older, unsupported version poses security risks. The OpenCore Legacy Patcher also supports Sonoma, Ventura, and Monterey. Check our guide on creating ZIP files for backing up your data.
Compatibility
Use our macOS compatibility checker to determine which macOS versions your Mac supports. Sequoia is compatible with MacBook Air (2020 and later), MacBook Pro (2018 and later), Mac mini (2018 and later), iMac (2019 and later), iMac Pro (2017), Mac Pro (2019 and later), and Mac Studio (2022 and later). Should You Update?
Older Macs may lack the hardware to run newer macOS versions smoothly. Expect performance issues and potential data loss. Back up your Mac before proceeding. Consider upgrading your Mac if you need optimal Sequoia performance.
Installation
First, back up your Mac. Download the macOS Sequoia installer on a compatible Mac. Create a bootable USB installer. Download the OpenCore Legacy Patcher. Run the patcher and follow the on-screen instructions. Boot your Mac holding the Option/Alt key. Select EFI Boot, then Install macOS Sequoia. For detailed instructions, refer to the OpenCore Legacy Patcher documentation.
Updating
After installing Sequoia, do not install updates via Software Update. Create a bootable USB installer with the updated installation files and install the update that way.
