Record and Transcribe Phone Calls with iOS 18.1

iOS 18.1 introduces integrated call recording and transcription for the Phone and FaceTime apps. This feature leverages machine learning to transcribe conversations, streamlining communication and note-taking. Learn more about the history of iOS.

How to Record

  1. Locate the Recording icon during a call.
  2. Tap the icon to initiate recording; a pre-recording message will play.
  3. Tap the stop button or end the call to finish recording.

Accessing Recordings and Transcriptions

Recordings are saved as notes within a dedicated "Call Recordings" folder. For supported languages, a transcription will accompany the audio. Read about iOS 18 rollout challenges.

You can navigate the transcript and the audio will synchronize accordingly. The Transcription icon toggles between the transcript and audio waveform view.

Working with Transcripts

Extract plain text transcripts, copy them, or share the audio via the More (...) menu. Search within transcripts using the Find in Transcript option. Apple Intelligence users can also generate summaries. Discover more about Apple Intelligence.

Requirements and Limitations

Transcription is limited to specific languages and requires an iPhone 12 or later. Call recording has broader language support but is still restricted. Consult Apple's official documentation for a complete list of supported languages and regions.
