Meta Releases Open-Source Tool to Watermark AI Videos

Deepfakes are a growing problem, with a 4x increase from 2023 to 2024, representing 7% of all online fraud. To combat this, Meta has released an open-source tool called Meta Video Seal to watermark AI-generated videos.

The tool adds imperceptible watermarks and hidden messages to videos, helping identify their origin. Meta claims it's resilient against common edits and compression. This complements Meta's other tools like Watermark Anything and Audio Seal.

Existing watermarking tools often lack robustness against video compression or aren't efficient for large-scale use. Meta Video Seal aims to address these shortcomings. For more on Apple's advancements in AI, see Apple's 2025 Roadmap.

While Video Seal offers improvements, it still faces limitations. Heavy compression or significant edits can affect the watermarks. Adoption is another challenge, as developers might already be using other solutions. See how Google Project Moohan is also tackling challenges in mixed reality.

To encourage adoption, Meta launched a public leaderboard, Meta Omni Seal Bench, to compare watermarking methods and is organizing a workshop at the ICLR AI conference. They aim to collaborate with the industry and academia to advance watermarking technology. For related news on AI integration, check out AirPods Enhanced with ChatGPT.
