Pixel Fold to Get Enhanced Fold Detection in Android 16
Addressing Magnetic Interference
The Pixel Fold utilizes hall sensors to detect its open or closed state. However, magnetic accessories can interfere with this mechanism, sometimes causing the screen to turn off unexpectedly. Android 16 aims to address this with a "robust open/close detection" feature.
New Setting in Android 16 Beta 2
Android 16 Beta 2 includes a notification prompting users to enable this enhanced detection if they use magnetic accessories. This suggests a new toggle in Settings, though it's not yet visible in the current beta. This rollout is similar to the staggered release of the 80% charging optimization feature. How It Works
Currently, placing magnets, such as third-party MagSafe rings, on the closed Pixel Fold can interfere with the hall sensor, briefly turning off the screen. The new feature aims to mitigate this issue. It's unclear what additional hardware or software mechanisms will be used. This improvement is expected to benefit both the current and future Pixel Fold models, potentially including the Galaxy Z Fold 7 competitor.
Availability
While the setting isn't yet active in Android 16 Beta 2, its appearance in notifications suggests an imminent release. Learn more about the Android 16 Beta 2 launch. The feature is expected to be available on the original Pixel Fold as well.
