Vipps Enables NFC Payments for iPhones
The Norwegian payment platform Vipps has integrated with Apple's NFC API, allowing users to make contactless payments directly from the Vipps app. This is a significant change following the EU's Digital Markets Act, which opened up the iPhone's NFC capabilities to third-party developers. How Vipps NFC Payments Work
- Users can make contactless payments with Bankaxept cards (Norway's national payment system).
- Visa and Mastercard support will be added soon, enabling worldwide contactless payments.
- Vipps can replace Apple Wallet as the default app triggered by double-clicking the side button.
This development marks a major step in competition against Apple's own payment system. For more on Apple and payments, see Apple Pay's launch in Paraguay.
Expanded NFC Access for Developers
Apple has expanded access to its NFC & SE Platform API to more countries, including Australia, Brazil, Canada, Japan, New Zealand, the UK, and the US. This allows developers to create secure wallet apps for various purposes, such as payments, digital keys, IDs, and tickets. Check out iOS 18.2's new features for more information.
