X's Grok AI Assistant Gets New Image Generator, Aurora

X (formerly Twitter) has introduced Aurora, a new image generator within its Grok AI assistant. The feature, briefly available on Saturday, allows users to create photorealistic images, including those of public figures and copyrighted characters. Grok, previously a premium feature, is now accessible to all X users.

Aurora's Capabilities and Limitations

Aurora excels at generating photorealistic images of landscapes and still lifes. However, it's not without flaws, as some user-generated images displayed unnatural blending of objects and imperfections in human forms, particularly hands. The image generator also appears to have few content restrictions, generating potentially graphic content. Similar AI tools often face similar challenges.

Development and Availability

While xAI staff announced Aurora, its development process remains unclear. It's uncertain whether xAI trained the model independently, built upon an existing generator, or collaborated with a third party. Free X users can send up to 10 messages to Grok every two hours and generate up to 3 images per day. AI monitoring tools are becoming increasingly important in managing such technologies.

Other X and xAI News

Alongside Aurora's release, xAI reportedly closed a $6 billion funding round and is potentially developing a standalone Grok app. The company may also be nearing the release of Grok 3, its next-generation AI model.
