Gemini Enhances Google Assistant on Nest Devices

Google has unveiled how Gemini, its AI model, empowers the Google Assistant on Nest Mini and Audio smart speakers. This enhancement enables more natural-sounding voices and AI-powered answers for a wider range of questions.

How to Access Gemini on Nest Devices

To experience Gemini, users need to join the Google Home Public Preview and enable "Experimental AI features." Currently, this feature is limited to the Nest Audio, 2nd-gen Nest Mini, and users in the US with Voice Match enabled. It's also only available in English for users 18 and over. Nest Hubs are not yet supported. For more details on Google's AI initiatives, see this article on Neubird's AI funding.

New Capabilities with Gemini

  • Deeper Understanding: Ask complex questions like "Can giraffes talk to each other?" to receive comprehensive answers about giraffe communication, habitat, and more.
  • Follow-up Questions: Engage in natural conversations with follow-up questions using "Hey Google."
  • Interruptions: Interrupt the Assistant's response anytime with "Hey Google" to ask for more information or change the prompt. This functionality mirrors the experience with Gemini Live on Android and iOS, as discussed in iOS 18.2: Beyond Apple Intelligence.

Important Considerations

Google emphasizes the experimental nature of these AI-powered answers. Users should not rely on them for professional advice (medical, legal, financial, etc.) and double-check information for accuracy. The responses do not represent Google's views. When using this feature, a chime will sound before the Assistant delivers an AI-powered answer.
