Google Home App Introduces New Member Access Levels

The Google Home app is rolling out two new member access levels: "Settings" and "Activity." These levels offer more granular control over device and home management compared to the existing Admin access.

  • Admin Access: For trusted individuals who share home management responsibilities. This level grants full control over all settings and devices.
  • Member Access with Settings: Allows full device control, device settings adjustments, and management of home-wide settings like automations and Nest Wifi features. This access level also permits using home devices within the Nest app.
  • Member Access with Activity: Enables checking device and home-wide history, including camera, lock, Nest Wifi, and home presence logs. This level also allows managing camera clip lending.

Both Member access levels permit basic device controls (e.g., live camera view) and personal settings management (Assistant features, media services, and presence). This update provides greater flexibility in managing shared homes within the Google Home ecosystem. For more information on Google Home features, check out the Google Discover's Material 3 Redesign.

The rollout is currently available through the Google Home Public Preview program. Participants can invite others to join with the new access levels, even if those individuals are not part of the beta program. However, recipients must have the latest version of the Google Home app. To add a member, navigate to Settings > Household & access > Add > Home member. The invited user will receive an email invitation to complete the process.
