Google Maps for iPhone Gets Sheet-Based UI Redesign

Improved Navigation and One-Handed Use

Google Maps on iPhone now sports a redesigned interface, moving away from full-screen views to a sheet-based design. This change, similar to a previous Android update, enhances usability and streamlines navigation within the app. The update features rounded corners on bottom sheets and preserves map context at the top even when viewing details. Closing listings now uses an "x" in the top right corner, improving one-handed access and mirroring Apple Maps. Google Search's AI mode also emphasizes user-friendly design.

Directions UI Overhaul

The directions interface also gets a refresh. After inputting a destination, the start and endpoints appear in a floating rectangle at the top. The transportation mode switcher moves to the bottom for easier reach. This change, previously rolled out on Android, now arrives on iPhones with version 25.10.2. This update aligns with the trend of improving app navigation, similar to updates seen in One UI 7.

Key Changes:

  • Sheet-based design replaces full-screen UIs.
  • Rounded corners on bottom sheets.
  • Map context preserved when viewing details.
  • "x" replaces back button for closing listings.
  • Directions UI updated with floating start/end points and relocated mode switcher.

This update reflects Google's focus on user experience, as seen in other updates like Wear OS 5.1. It makes navigating Google Maps on iPhone smoother and more intuitive.
