Google Maps Timeline Now on Your Device
Google Maps' location history, now called "Your Timeline," is moving from the cloud to your device. This change enhances user privacy by storing location data locally.
- Timeline data is now device-specific and no longer accessible via the web.
- A backup and device transfer system is available to preserve data across devices.
- Users have six months to transition to the new setup.
How to Back Up Your Timeline
After the update, close and reopen the Google Maps app, then access "Your Timeline." You'll see a prompt to back up your data. Alternatively, tap the cloud icon in the top bar. This allows you to encrypt and upload a copy of your Timeline to your Google Account.
Key Changes and Benefits
- Improved privacy: Location data is stored locally on your device.
- Data portability: Backup and transfer system ensures data is not lost when switching devices.
- Simplified access: Timeline is accessed directly through the Google Maps app.
