Vipps Introduces Tap-to-Pay for iPhones in Norway
Vipps, a Norwegian mobile payment service, has launched a tap-to-pay solution for iPhones, becoming the first to leverage Apple's opened NFC technology. Starting December 9, 2024, users from participating Norwegian banks can make contactless payments at most terminals across the country.
How It Works
Similar to other NFC payment methods, users hold their iPhones near a compatible terminal. Authentication is handled through Face ID, Touch ID, or passcode. Vipps can be set as the default payment app, activated by double-clicking the Side button.
Key Features
- Available from December 9, 2024 in Norway.
- Supports SpareBank 1, DNB, and 40+ other banks.
- Compatible with over 90% of payment terminals in Norway.
- Uses Face ID, Touch ID, or passcode for authentication.
Future Expansion
Vipps plans to expand support for Visa and Mastercard by summer 2025. The service is also expected to launch in Denmark, Finland, and Sweden later in 2025. This development follows Apple's agreement with European regulators to open its NFC technology.
