Google Maps Timeline Location History Disappears for Some Users
Some Google Maps users are reporting that their Timeline location history has disappeared, dating back years. This issue appears despite users migrating to on-device location history and disabling auto-delete. While the Timeline toggle indicates it's active, no data is displayed, even for the current day.
Dozens of reports have surfaced in the past 24 hours, but the issue doesn't appear to be universal. It's unclear whether the data has been deleted or if a bug is preventing it from displaying. This comes after Google's 2023 announcement that Maps location history would move to on-device storage for privacy reasons. Users had until June 9, 2024 to migrate, or risk data loss. A backup and transfer system exists for new devices, but affected users currently only see a "delete" option, unable to access their backups.
